Iwo Jima veterans stand proudly during a 21-gun salute at sunset after they laid the commemorative wreath during the 67th Iwo Jima Sunset Ceremony at Camp Pendleton’s South Mesa Club, Feb. 18. The sunset ceremony paid tribute to nearly 7,000 Marines that sacrificed their lives during one of the Corps’ toughest battles ever. Hundreds gathered to honor and remember the Marines who lost their lives during World War II on the shores of Iwo Jima 67 years ago. More Marines died during that battle than any other battle in Marine Corps history, according to Headquarters Marine Corps’ Historical Branch. Following the sunset ceremony, more than 75 honored veterans and their guests enjoyed a dinner celebration, followed by a reenactment of the iconic moment that is popularly remembered for the photograph taken above Mount Suribachi in 1945 when five Marines and one Navy corpsman raised the American flag after capturing the island.

Commandant Delivers 2012 Report To HASC On The Posture Of The U....

Commandant Delivers 2012 Report To HASC On The Posture Of The U.
[Why do I want to be a Marine?] - We ask recruits currently in training why they decided to endure 13 weeks of boot camp to earn the title. Here’s what one said:

Pfc. Jessica Campbell initially had plans to become a Marine, but ended up enlisting in the National Guard. After spending two years as a supply specialist and armorer, and earning the rank of specialist, Campbell decided to try her luck at Marine Corps recruit training.

“It is one of those things that if I looked back later in life [I’d think] ‘I should have done that.’ You realize that now is the time to do it if you still can,” Campbell said.

Campbell said that she enlisted partially out of the desire to set a good example for her three-year-old son.
